It's been a rough couple days. My Aunt lost someone very close to her and she's just been a wreck. I'm very happy to have been able to be there for her and stay with her last night so she didn't have to be alone. I'm really very worried about her and I hope that myself and my family can help her through this difficult time. I love her so much and I hope she can weather this storm. I ask all of you who read this to keep her in your prayers. She asks that we pray that God gives her the strength to move on. Thank you all for keeping her and us in your prayers.

The Future is Clear
Well, our future has now been laid out for us. Stephen got a job in Downtown LA. Yes, CA! We will be moving in the 2012 year. We are so excited that he finally got a job. I can't explain how difficult it is to live your life in limbo and not be sure if you'll be able to afford to pay your utilities, your grocery bills...unless you've lived it yourself. It really taught us a lesson in generosity, love, hope, and the fragility of your impending future. You just never know what is going to happen to you from day to day. As the saying goes..."Man plans, God laughs!" Because of our situation, I have to say, we realized that we have so very many people who care about us and our well being. We were well taken care of financially and some wonderful saints in our Parish made sure that our Christmas was taken care of. We will never forget the generosity of these wonderful people. Another lesson we have learned was that we can live without things we didn't think we could before, and that we can use our future earnings to support a family in need as has been done for us. Once we get back on our feet, that is exactly what we are going to do. We are grateful for everyone who helped us and we are humbled by the lesson we've learned through this whole ordeal. So, if there is anything you can learn from my post today...take care of those in need. Be a good Samaritan and your life will be blessed in more ways than you can ever imagine.

So, it's been a while since I've posted a blog. But with recent events in entertainment news these days I just couldn't resist. So, really, why is it that Celebs think it's cool to get married and divorced to as many people as they can. I mean really? First there's the Kardashian. 72 days of marriage and she just couldn't handle it. She had to file for divorce. Which brings me to the fact that she just has too much damn money. You might ask, "what does that have to do with being married for 72 days?" Well, I'll tell you. She wanted this gigantic princess wedding so she could gain lots of press, have this gigantic party and she spent a butt load of money on it! Hello?!!! She could have given ME or someone else in my similar type of situation some of the money she spent on that elaborate wedding so that we could dig ourselves out of debt and be able to have some cash to live on (since my hubby's unemployed) and it wouldn't have even made a dent in her bank account. Wasteful, I tell you, wasteful. Then there's Ashton and Demi. They shouldn't have gotten married anyway. Too much of an age difference and, let's face it, was kinda weird that they got married in the first place. But, hey, who am I to judge.
I would just like to know/find a famous couple that's been married for Eons that can set a good example for the married people of the world. I have been happily married for 16 years now and I wouldn't change a day of it. I just wish the rest of the world would live by that example and not follow the "trend" of the rich and famous, who, by the way, don't live in reality anyway. Or maybe I should be annoyed at the people who try to emulate the rich and famous and "do as they do" so to say. Is this really a monkey see monkey do kinda world? It's all really annoying and frustrating at the same time. Wake up People! The rich and famous, if setting a good example is what their goal is, should actually set a good example. Don't get married if you have any inkling that it won't work out. Don't get married to just show off how much money you have. And maybe we should be looking to you, those who have a butt load of money to spend, to dig us out of this crappy economy! Give to the poor, people, GIVE TO THE POOR!
(on a side note, my husband thinks I'm being petty with this post. Well, I don't care and that's part of why we have a good marriage. It doesn't matter if we agree or not. I'm also annoyed. Really annoyed. Annoyed that we think lavish things like this are cool and annoyed that the economy is still in the toilet and is affecting us.)

The Earth's a shakin
This one goes out to the East Coast for their experience in an earthquake today. I pray for any injured. I know it wasn't a huge quake, but one none the less. I have family on the East coast and haven't heard from any of them, so all I can do is assume they are fine. Weird how things seem to be changing now a days. Our summer was unusually cool this year, the earth has had some weird earthquakes and Tsunami's, and some places in the US had some unusually HOT summers. Wonder what our winter will bring? Interesting how things are changing...wonder where it will lead?!

The beginning of a New Year
First off, I have to say it SUCKS to have to get up early again! That being said, it was a nice first day for my 2 littlest kiddos. Let's start with Meganne...she was tired this morning, but she was excited to go to Kindergarten. She ate well, and, OH YEAH, the tooth fairy came to visit last night too! She was very happy to get another $2 bill. I took a few pics of her before school started and she couldn't wait to see her friends again. When I picked her up her first words to me were "I LOVE Kindergarten!" So, we're off to a good start.
Andrew did well getting up this morning too. He also ate well and was excited for his first day of 3rd grade. Got some good photos of him and off to class he went. When I picked him up he was happy to tell me that his first day was "Great" and that he got to make a Sunflower. (Apparently his art project for the week.) He even had homework! It was easy, though, as he had to describe his first day of school to his teacher. My boy even wrote neatly in cursive! I'm so proud of him.
Now I have one left to go. Alexander starts next Tuesday and he's not as excited as the other two, but oh well. He'll survive I think.

Here's to the future
Today, my last weekend to relax before having to be a slave to the alarm, I am sitting on my bed, playing on my laptop and trying my best to do the things I really want to do. I plan to catch up on Facebook, read through my emails, try to finish my crochet project and just do a whole lot of nothing. For Monday, I have to be the taxi, or chauffeur if you will. I do so look forward to my children going back to school again. I know my daughter will love her new kindergarten teacher. Andrew will be happy to see his friends again in the 3rd grade and Alexander will be busy with his new apple computers and Ipads that will be supplied for his 8th grade year at EKA. I'm so proud of my children's school accomplishments of the past and look forward to more in the upcoming year. So, for now I will just enjoy my last weekend and enjoy my last 2 days with my children at home.

End of Summer Wrap Up
As we draw closer to the end of the summer season I am faced with the fact that my kids are getting older and are preparing to go to school yet again. This means many things to me. 1) It means that my days of sleeping in are almost over. Damn! I love to sleep in. I hate mornings and I've hated mornings all my life. The only time mornings are of an advantage to me is when I have to grocery shop after I drop off the kids at school...the shelves are stocked, there aren't very many people in the store and these 2 things together make for a quicker shopping experience for this busy mama! 2) I'm getting old! My kids are getting older and therefore I am getting older. This doesn't please me. Who knew when I started my family that I would be judging my age by how fast my kids grew up. Not fun guys, really not fun. 3) I get some time to myself during the day so that I can do things around the house without little feet getting in my way. I can also crochet and sew Christmas gifts with the element of surprise and not have to worry about them walking in on my project and ask me "Whatchya makin mom?"
As I look at my beautiful children I can't help but miss their "baby-ness." Alexander is going into the 8th grade. In 5 very short years we will be sending him to college (or so we hope) and he will be out on his own. Then will be the true test of how we were as parents. Will he be a successful, independent 18 year old and able to live on his own without his mommy & daddy? I sure hope so! My little brainiac Andrew is going in to the 3rd grade. I was looking at his pre-K picture, his first year at OLLV, the other day and couldn't believe how much he's grown up. I have no doubt that he will be successful in the 3rd grade there this year. And then there's my little princess Meganne. Hard to believe this little spitfire will be entering Kindergarten. Good luck Mrs. Marsh is all I have to say.
Harder to believe is how fast this summer went. I had many plans to sew, relax, crochet, swim with the kids, have play dates with friends and the summer just didn't have enough days to fit it all in. No play dates occurred. It was hard to take them to my Aunt's to swim because her heater broke and turned her pool green and by the time she got it fixed, we went to Cali for a week. Then my Mother in law came to spend a week with us and we returned to Cali for yet another week. That was a good chunk of the summer. The kids had a great time being able to spend it with their cousins and I was enjoying the cooler weather. By the time we got back it was time to start getting ready for school again. So, yes, the time flew way too fast. Oh well, it was well spent.
Stephen continued his job hunt and it has still not turned into anything, but I can say there may be a light at the end of that tunnel. There has been a lot of communication between him and a company based here and in California. Positions in Cali may be coming up, but nothing is set in stone. So, until it is, he's still gainfully, if I can use that word, unemployed. All I can say folks, is LIMBO sucks!! We keep saying our prayers, we keep our hopes up and we keep leaving our fate in God's hands. I know we will be taken care of, I'm just sick of waiting!! (As is Stephen.)
So, all in all, its time to wrap up our little summer story and move on to the next chapter in our lives. Wish us luck, keep us in your thoughts and prayers and thanks for reading.

The Drive
So we took a 2 day drive to Oroville, CA and back so that Stephen could go to a job interview for General Services for Butte County. The drive was interesting to say the least. I got to see parts of California I had never seen before. Namely the Imperial Valley. I have never seen so much farmland in my life. And 8 HOURS of it! Now I see why California alone can feed the world. Geez! As for Oroville, it was a cute, old little town. The houses were cool and the ones I saw were built in probably the early 1900's. It was very green there, which is much the opposite of Vegas. I kinda fell in love with the place. However, it's not looking too promising that Stephen will get the job. :( He got a 77% on his Oral exam and it placed him in the 5th group of second interviews. We think the Environmental Engineering question probably hurt him and the fact that he wasn't hispanic, a woman or a veteran probably docked some points as well. So, he's driven to fill out more online apps, get his own business off the ground and get involved in the part time job he was offered by a company here in Vegas. So, we'll see what the near future brings! I have faith, still, that God will lead us in the right direction and lead the right job to Stephen.

I'm getting old
This past weekend I spent in Boulder City celebrating my 20 year High School Reunion. Twenty years ago, when I graduated, I had not a thought or care in the world to think to the future this far. But yet, here it was. It's very hard to believe. I went to the 10 year one and everyone looks the same as they did 10 years ago, which is good for all of us I think. It was so neat to see everyone, re live some high school memories, and even be able to talk to people I never spoke to in High School. While some things do change, like the "un-popular" kids (of which I was) talking to the "popular" kids, other things don't change. The "clicks" still hung out together, as they should, because those were the people who were friends in High School. Some people look the same and everyone enjoyed looking at all the photo memories that were saved even from our Elementary School years. That was cool! All in all, it was a really fun weekend and it was nice to hang out with people I haven't seen in years. So, my thanks go out to Mike who put the whole thing together, to Summer and Jennifer who did all the decorating, and to those who donated their talents, like Tyler who took all the photos, and their mementos! Now I guess I get to go back to feeling old! And to think, we'll all be almost 50 at our 30 year reunion! Ugh!!!!

Cha-cha-cha-changes
So as I sit here in front of my laptop I can't help but think about all the changes we've gone through in the past 12 months. Some are good, some are bad. I've lost some very good friends, my kids are growing up and finished their pre-k, second grade, and 7th grade years. My daughter has lost her first tooth. My 13 year old is beginning puberty (ugh.) My 8 year old is gaining leaps and bounds on the drums. My husband turned 40 and coincidentally got laid off on the same day. We face the unknown in careers for the second time in our marriage. He has an interview in Northern CA that may or may not lead to anything. Some really good friends are moving to Hawaii and we will miss them tremendously. And the list goes on and on. It's hard to believe, sometimes, how life can throw you some really terrible curve balls. But I also can't help but think how lucky I am to have the wonderful husband and children I have. I worry about what's to come, but at the same time I know and I have faith that the Lord has our back. He will provide for us like he always does. We may have some bumps and bruises along the way, but I know we will survive.
I will miss my 5 year old being in Pre-K and the cute things she brought home to me this year. On the other hand, she will bring home equally cute things from Kindergarten. I will miss my 8 year old being in the best number at the Christmas Pageant this year, but there will be another Christmas pageant and I will be just as proud. I will miss my 13 year old's "baby" years as he now enters the realm of adulthood. I know our relationship will change as he grows older, but he will still always be my first baby. And, if my hubby gets a job in Northern CA, I will miss our life here in Vegas, but I know there will be great things to come no matter where we end up.

He's out of his mind!!!
So, as I was folding laundry today, Stephen had on CNN. The president was speaking in North Carolina (could have been south, wasn't paying close attention to the location.) Anyway, apparently that state has at least a 9% unemployment rate. So, the President's big idea was to start a program to get people trained as Engineers so that they can get hired in the private industry or start their own. Hello? Stephen's an Engineer and he hasn't been hired yet, so now he's going to have to compete with a whole bunch of people that are suddenly going to flood the Engineering job market? How is that fair? HIRE HIM!!! Don't give those jobs to new people!!! Anyway, it pissed me off that the President thinks that's a great solution to the joblessness of the American people, meanwhile my Engineer Husband still sits here unemployed!!!!

Summertime
Well, It's officially summer vacation for my beebles and I have to admit, I have no idea what we are going to do with our days to keep us busy. Since it's still hard to make any plans for anything, we have decided to take things day by day. I know we will go to the library weekly, we have some things we can bake, we have a sprinkler to play in in the back yard and there's the Video games they desperately want to play from morning till night (which isn't going to happen because I believe in exercise and imaginative play and NOT gluing themselves to the TV and the video games.) Although I look forward to summer vacations because I like to sleep in and not be committed to anything, at the same time I feel like it's not a vacation since I'll have to find ways to keep all 3 busy and happy. I will also be trying to keep them out of Stephen's hair so he can continue his job hunt. So, what to do? I guess enjoy my time with them, relax when I can and do my best to make them as happy as can be. Wish me luck!!!

Changing nutrition
Since I'm working out about every day and trying my hardest (with the exception of this week) to eat better and lose weight, I thought I'd share an article that I thought was brilliant. They've changed the food pyramid to the icon of the plate with all the healthy foods you should eat. I love it. It makes sense and I hope I can incorporate this into my diet. Here's the link to the article. Give it a quick read and see what you think. New Food Plate

Summing up the School year
So, today my blog is very "kid" involved. First off, Meganne has her first loose tooth. She's so very excited about it. She has been asking me since last summer when she was going to lose a tooth. Well, now's the time. Compared to the boys, she's late. They lost 4 teeth by the time they were 5 1/2 and she's just now losing her first! Anyway, the tooth fairy will be finding her way back to our house very soon.
Secondly, Meganne's last week of school is this week. Pre K gets out earlier than the rest. I can't believe this is the last year of having Mrs. Boleky as a teacher. We loved Mrs. Boleky. She's very calm, quiet and loving and I will be sad that my kids won't have her again. She will have a special loving place in our hearts though. Meganne will have a little graduation ceremony next Tuesday, and that's it. Summer break for her. Then I will have a KINDERGARTNER for the last time! Yikes! Like Andrew, she wants to start kindergarten right away. It's so very cute.
Next, my Andrew will be ending the 2nd grade. A lot has happened for him this school year. Most importantly (and not only for us, but for him since he called it the best day of his life) was his first Communion. I just can't believe he will be entering the 3rd grade in the Fall. Wow, that time flew. He will also be training to be an Altar Server in a few weeks. He's afraid to do it, but I think he will enjoy it in the end. Especially if he feels like it's an important job. (Which it is for the kids.)
Then there's my Alexander, who just this year turned 13. I'm not old enough to have a teenager! Really, I'm not. LOL. Anyway, equally hard to believe is that he will be entering the 8TH grade in the fall. High school is just a hop, skip and a jump away and I'm so not ready to go there! I'm especially not ready for him to drive, since he's eligible to do that in 3 short years. I keep telling him he has to wait until he's 18. We'll see how long he lets me get away with that I guess.
So, now I have to come up with some ideas to keep them busy during the summer that doesn't involve 12 hour long days of Video games. I would like to enroll them in Swim lessons again, but I don't see that happening...I know we'll do library days, and maybe swimming at my Aunt's house. I know we have a few possible play dates at a friend's house that also involves swimming, but otherwise...Ugh! Sprinklers, water balloons, child labor (having them clean the house with me), baking and, reading will have to occupy us.
All that being said, I'm looking forward most to not having to pack lunchboxes and getting to sleep in. (Unless, of course, I have to get a job, which I'm still considering for myself.) Happy almost summer to all of you! And keep us in your prayers!! Thanks!

Not challenging the Universe
Ok, I know things are supposed to come in 3's but I'm hoping that we will be the exception to the rule. So far, since March, Stephen has been laid off and today he was involved in a car accident that tied up the 95 for about an hour. Luckily he and Alexander, who was with him because he'd just been picked up from school, were not at all injured. Apparently the driver that hit Stephen blew a tire, hit the guard rail and slid across the freeway right into Stephen's passenger side. Stephen saw the whole thing happen and slowed down as much as he could before the guy hit, but alas, he couldn't avoid the collision. Stephen thinks he was only going about 10mph at the time and the guy slammed the guard rail at at least 65 and therefore was going way too fast, even sliding, to avoid hitting Stephen. Anyway, now we have to go through getting the car into the shop, possibly getting a rental, and awaiting the repairs. It's all just a huge pain in the ass now. But if this was 2 of our 3....well, I'm not even going to entertain that notion. I'm going to remain positive that from here on out it will be rainbows, blue skies and puppies for us. I have faith that everything will be fine with the car and that Stephen will find out in the next 2 weeks that his "Dream Job" wants him. I keep praying for this and I know God has our back.

My summer sewing
My summer sewing projects have begun. I have now made Meganne 2 skirts that she can wear in the warm weather and I love them. I'm so excited to make some more things. I may even spoil myself and make myself something cute to wear in the warm weather. Sewing is getting a little less scary for me and a lot more fun. I even found a tutor that is willing to help me out. My plans you ask? I will make some shorts for the boys and maybe a pair for Meganne, a skirt for myself and maybe a sun dress as well. I will even try to get a head start on some winter flannels for Stephen and the kids, but that we will have to see. It's also my goal to get some crocheting done and make some Christmas presents for everyone so I don't have to cram it all in in November. Anyway, "sew" can't wait to get some projects done!

Couponing
So a new show on TLC is called Extreme Couponing. It's totally astounding if you have never watched it. It's about people who clip coupons and get thousands of dollars worth of groceries for only pennies and sometimes totally free. It's amazing. There does seem to be some downsides to this technique, however. Some people go dumpster diving for said coupons. Some people steal papers from Foreclosed homes and take the coupons out of them. But the most common downfall is that it seems to be a full time job. With researching sales, coupon clipping, coupon gathering, online research and stock piling it takes up to 30 or 40 hours a week to save this kind of money. It's truly amazing. These people also seem to be EXTREMELY organized people as well, something that is just not my forte. I also don't have the kind of storage space needed to house all these items. Another downfall is sacrificing name brands you might use on a regular basis. So, with all this in mind, it does seem to be worth the money in savings, but since I'm a learner through example, I would need one of these "specialists" to teach me how to do it and how to organize my house in order to make it worthwhile. But if I could get all my groceries for free, especially since our current economical situation is in need of some money saving I would be willing to start a coupon co-op with anyone in Vegas who's interested and we can learn how to do this together...Any takers?

The anxiety of the Brilliant
My boy Andrew is a brilliant 8 year old. He gets straight A's in Catholic school, (well, maybe 1 B) and our conversations with him often remind me of talking to a 30 year old in an 8 year old body. Well, along with his brilliance comes worry and anxiety. He has always been a worry wart and has often had meltdowns because of a crisis he shouldn't be having at his age. Like worrying, at the age of 4, that he couldn't hug, and touch and see Jesus like he can his parents...that's a story for a different time. Well last night was one of those nights. Although it was a worry of an 8 year old issue, the level of his worry was that of an Adult.
Today was the deadline of his 20 book reading challenge at school. Along with it was a Mobile he had to make utilizing all the parts of a book (characters, setting, beginning, middle, end...) on ONE book he chose of the 20 he read. Oh, and did I mention he had only read 16 of the 20 books by yesterday so he had to cram in 3 more books, CHAPTER books, after school because he HAD to read all 20? No? Well, along with cramming all those books into one afternoon, he also had to finish his mobile.
So, Bedtime rolls around and he's finished all this homework, and we've brushed his teeth and tucked him in. So, he gets up out of bed after 1 minute and starts stressing out that he's going to forget to bring his project to school. So he has to find some place to put it so it doesn't get ruined AND so he remembers to bring it to school. We ensure him that we will remember in the morning and tuck him in again. Then he gets up and decides to go get the project that had been carefully placed on the dining room table and brings it into our room because he wants ME to remember to bring it. I assure him that if he puts it where he sits at the breakfast table, it will be remembered. Again, he is tucked in. Then he gets up and writes himself a note to remember it and tapes it to his door. Again he is tucked in. Then he calls to us to come in his room. So Stephen goes in there and he is upset and crying and afraid that he will still forget the project in the morning and his ears were covered by his sheets. Stephen had to calm him down from this anxiety. He used comic relief and talked to him about Sheldon, a genius in the Big Bang Theory who often has anxiety and has to do things at certain times on certain days, in a show that's a fave of the whole family. That, along with other anecdotes, made him feel well enough to sleep.
Geez, I mean SERIOUSLY, he's 8 for heaven's sake! He's having anxiety over things that Adults stress over and this isn't the first time. Ahhhhhh, the con to having a child that's brilliant. This, is something that Stephen had to explain to him. People who actually have brains in their heads and who know how to use them think of things that can go wrong in situations that other's don't think of. Thus, anxiety. Since Andrew has been this way his whole life, I guess it's something we're going to have to deal with for his whole life to come. I love him dearly and I wish I could take away his worries, but I know that calming him down will be the only thing that will ease is mind. The question is can we, as parents, be creative enough to talk him down from future situations like these? I hope so!

Jesus is within him
Saturday was a remarkable day in our family. My little Andrew received his first Holy Communion. He wore his brother's suit, which fit him perfectly, thank GOD! He had been looking forward to it all week and was sooooo excited when Saturday finally came. It truly touched my heart to see him receive communion for the first time and to know he'd really wanted to do it. But I have to say, the best part wasn't the mass. I know, you'd think it was, but really, it wasn't. The best part was after the mass was over and we drove home together, just him and me (because Stephen and the rest of the family had to get the BBQ party started) and we talked about what had just happened. I told him that I was so excited and happy for him and I told him congratulations. He said to me, "I'm so happy because this was the best time of my life and I'm Soooooooo happy!" I just wanted to cry. I think he compared it to other important events in his life, but this one was the best of all of them. I also think I asked him why he was so happy and he told me it was because it was the first time he got to receive communion and he was so happy that he finally got to receive Jesus in his body. Really, it was a tear jerking moment! The next day was also very special to me, not only because it was Mother's day, but because I was scheduled to be a Eucharistic Minister for mass AND I got to serve the body of Christ to my wonderful, beautiful 8 year old son. He was happy, I later found out, that it was ME that got to serve him. What an honor it was to give him the body of Christ the second time he got to receive it. Anyway, that was truly the best Mother's day gift I could have gotten, to see my son receive communion for the first time and then get to serve him myself. I don't think I'll ever forget this weekend for as long as I live!!!

Breaking News
So, the news of the day (and last evening for that matter) is that Osama Bin Laden is dead. YIPEE!!! It only took 10 years to find him...But nonetheless, he's gone, gone, and more gone, given to the sharks for shark bait (SHARK BAIT-Oooh HA HA!) It's great that he's gone and I hope he rots in hell, but this still doesn't bring back the people who died on 9-11-2001. My only hope is that this brings closure to the victim's families and that they can be in peace that there's one less terrorist in the world.

I Knew you Could
Given all the trials and tribulations of my life as of late, I had an inspiration for my blog today. Tonight I read a train book to Meganne. It's been one of my favorites for some time. It used to belong to Andrew, but since he's reading chapter books now, I gave it to Meganne. It's a book called I Knew You Could written by Craig Dorfman. I hope this book inspires someone today as it did me...
I knew you could! And you knew it too-
That you'd come out on top after all you've been through.
And from here you'll go farther and see brand-new sights.
You'll face brand-new hills that rise to new heights.
I wish I could show you the stops that you'll visit,
But that isn't my choice to make for you now, is it?
Instead, I can tell you some lessons and tales
That I've learned an drelearned in my time on the rails.
First of all, you must find your own track,
So you can start right away and not be held back.
But which track is yours? Well, that all depends
On which way it's going and where it might end.
And then it goes on to talk about the journey you make as a train and all the people you see, that you might want to be a car or a plane instead of a train, but in the end you are happy with who you are and you need to enjoy the track you have chosen. It's an awesome book. I suggest it to everyone who has kids and even if you don't, sneak into the kids section of the bookstore or library and read it yourself. It's awesomely inspiring.

Easter Memories and a new week
Our Easter was wonderful. I, again, got to bring 12 people into the Catholic Faith. They were all so greatful for their journey and they truly enjoyed themselves during the ceremony. Now I continue to pray that they follow their faith journey and continue to be happy in our Church.
Sunday I crashed. Stephen let me sleep in till 9:30! Go me! I was still so tired that day, but I was able to spend my afternoon and evening with my wonderful friends for Easter Feast. It was great. The kids had a great time, they were wonderfully behaved and they ate really well. Thank God! I appreciated being able to spend my time with people I love and care about for Easter. We even got to watch Jesus Christ Superstar together! That made me happy. :)
And now, we are on to the new task. Prepping for Andrew's first Holy Communion, continuing Stephen's job hunt, and enjoying the last month of school. I hope for great things in the next few weeks and I know something good will happen with Stephen's job hunt. I just ask that you all continue to keep us in your prayers.

My babies
Today I am on vacation. Vacation from my babies. They are having a splendid time in CA with their cousins. I miss them a lot, but it's nice to be able to sleep in and get some things done around the house without the littles in the way. They really make me laugh though because there was DRAMA last night when we called them. Apparently the phone drama was just that, an ACT! They were perfectly happy to do what their Aunt said, they were excited to sleep where they chose, and they were in the process of putting on jammies and brushing their teeth when we called. But as soon as they spoke to us on the phone, it was a different story. They whined, they cried, and made it seem like they didn't get to do ANYTHING they wanted to do. Why do they have to "act" on the phone like things aren't going their way? Is it because they want to make us feel guilty? Well, we don't. We know they are having fun and we know they love being there, so why do they act like it's the worst thing in the world to be there? I don't get it. It must be a kid thing.

Spring Break
This week is spring break. There is a lot going on for me. Today Stephen drove the kids to Barstow and met Uncle Dan there so he could take them to Stephen's siser's house. They are going to spend a few days with the cousins in CA. This is good for them. They get to see their cousins, their Aunt and Uncle, and Their Grandma-ma. They also get to escape the stress at home for a few days. Although they don't show it, I know they know things are going on with us and they feel the stress of a "job free" home from Stephen and me. We try hard to keep things as normal as we can for them, but the subtleties are obviously there. It's hard to hide it all.
This week, being Holy Week, is also busy for me. Since I run the RCIA program, this week is the BIG WEEK for my Elect. It's full of Mass, preparation, rehearsal, and faith enrichment for them and for me. On Saturday the Catholic community will welcome 12 new Catholics into the faith. I'm so excited, but at the same time, it feels very unreal. The year went so fast and so many things happened, that this next week feels a little like it's in a fog. I'm hoping they enjoy the week and they get everything out of it that they expect, at least, and maybe even more. As for me, I look forward to the spiritual retreat. I definitely need it. It will be nice to reflect on the Lord and his sacrifice for us and to use this week to maybe get some answers as to what our future holds.
Today's mass was Palm Sunday. The Gospel was the Passion of Christ. It brought me to tears a couple of times. But what was funny about it is that Father spoke about leaving everything in God's hands. I've heard this message for the past few weeks now and I'm certainly doing my best, however hard it may be at times. I know we will have a good future, I just hope it happens soon. I know the Lord suffered for us and sometimes we are required to carry our cross and do the same, but that doesn't mean I want the suffering to linger. Anyway, I was glad I could kick off the week with a good mass and get in touch with God and feel blessed that I was alive to experience it. So, to all my Catholic and Christian friends, Happy Palm Sunday and Happy Holy week everyone!

The life of the cat
Our family has 7 pets. Two dogs, two cats, and 3 fish. I have often wondered, growing up with animals, what it would be like to be one and I have even been envious, on occasion, of the lives they live. They have someone to feed them, bathe them, and even clean up their poop. Mostly the only thing they have to worry about is where they are going to spend their daily nap. This brings me to my thought of the day. I took a photo of our two cats sleeping on the bed. They looked soooo relaxed and I got a bit jealous that I wasn't curled up in a ball napping with them, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, looking at them snoozing together brought me joy and happiness 1) because it was cute and 2) because it's nice that I have a loving home for them to live in. It just disgusts me that other animals in the world are being abused and neglected. How can you possibly look into the eyes of a cat or a loveable dog and think, "I know, I'll beat the crap out of them today because that will be fun!" I mean, seriously....
Anyway, here is a cool link for you. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3 On the top of the page, if you click on the "click here to give" button, you will give a certain amount of food to rescued animals. Please help, it's free and in the meantime take a look at my cute kitties napping together today on my bed. Dusty is the gray one and Frodo, Alexander's cat, is the black and white one.
Have a blessed day!

Craftsy lately
So, these days, when I'm the most busy with Easter just around the corner, I've been feeling craftsy. Yesterday I crocheted a purse for my mother. I also tried to sew a panel to a pair of old jeans to make a frilly skirt for Meganne, but I can't figure out how to do it. Luckily I know a wonderful lady who agreed to teach me how after Easter is over. I really want to make the boys some shorts for the summer, but alas I have no pattern. My question is why do I want to start all these projects when I'm super busy? Maybe it's my way of getting away from reality. Who knows. But I've been having fun thinking of all the projects I'm going to start. I love to crochet and sew, I just wish I were better at both. See photo below of the things I've made with crochet.
Oh yeah, and did I mention at these times I'm also very interested in drowning myself in a good book? Reading is such a fun activity, I just wish I could devote more time to doing it. Oh well, one day I can.
The Blue and Brown Purse is the one I made yesterday for my mom.

Future Unclear
These days are hard for us in our household as we wait in hope for what's to come with Job hunting for Stephen. I'm a planner and I hate not knowing what the rest of the year will bring for us. Stephen is doing wonderful in looking for jobs and sending out his resume and such. But not hearing back and not having interviews worries me. What will the future bring? Will we be able to stay in Vegas? Will I be able to keep the kids in their schools? Will we move to CA over the summer? Where will we live if we do move to CA? Will whatever job he gets pay enough and have benefits? UGH! The things to think about. I know he's stressing about all of this too. But I really have to stress to you that he's doing such a great job in sending out applications and resumes. When I think about the future I also have to think about all the things I will miss in Vegas if we end up having to move. My family lives here. I run the RCIA program at my church which I LOVE doing. I have friends here that I will miss greatly. The kids will have to change schools and I may have to go through a ton of work to find a good fit for Alexander again. Finding Dr's, Dentists, Retina Specialists, Churches...not to mention getting new Driver's Licenses, Car Registration, Insurance...Ugh! I try not to think about it.
If I had to go on a gut feeling, I would have to bet that Stephen will get a job out of state. If that's what it takes I'm there! I want him to find a good fit and I really think there is nothing more for him here in Vegas. He put in his 15 years and look at what it got him. Laid OFF! So, I'm really kind of bitter about it. Anyway, I pray to the Lord every day that something good will come along and QUICK so that we can prepare for the school year for the kids.
This Thursday Ivan, a visionary from Medjugorje, will be at our parish. I have left my Intentions at the Church for Mother Mary to intercede for us. I plan to bring all my worries to her and leave it up to the Lord. I'm really looking forward to it and seeing it as a spiritual retreat for myself. I can't wait. I hope I get some answers that night, and if I don't, I know they will be quick in coming. Anyway, Please continue to keep us in your prayers for now. I know we can get through this, it's just a matter of time. I just HATE waiting.

My kids are really funny
So, here's the story about Andrew and Meganne from over the weekend...
Saturday morning I went to pick up my very first bountiful basket (which will be a story for a different day.) Anyway, I ran into the aid in Andrew's class while I was there. She asked me how Andrew is liking 2nd grade. I told her he likes it as much as any normal 8 year old can like school. She told me, "He's REALLY smart." I said, yes, he's soooo different from his older brother and I proceeded to tell her about their homework/schoolwork differences. Alexander hates to do his work and will come up with a million and one reasons why he can't or wont do it. Andrew, on the other hand, will finish it rather quickly. I told her "I tell him it's time to do his homework and literally 1 minute later he's done with it." (I'm not joking. he finishes it in one minute) She said, "He's like that in class too. I will walk around the room while all the kids are doing their seat work and I'll come to Andrew's desk. He's drawing on a piece of paper. I'll ask him why he's not doing his work and he tells me 'I'm done!' Sure enough he shows me his work and it's finished." She also told me that this past week the tests have gotten harder. They have 2 part questions, so Mrs. Carlisle, his teacher, has begun reading the questions to them to make sure they understand how to do the test. So, the aid tells me "Mrs. Carlisle will be on question 3 of a 10 question test and Andrew has finished the whole thing on his own and usually gets an A. So, he gets his journal and starts drawing again." I always knew he was smart, but GEEZ! It really makes me feel good that he's doing so well in class. It's such a breath of fresh air to have an "easy" kid after dealing with the school struggles I've dealt with in Alexander (who, by the way is also very smart, but I wish he would apply his brain to his school work instead of his cleverness in getting out of it!)
Now, on to Meganne's story. So, my mom and I are shopping on Saturday for Alexander's birthday presents. We're at Walmart in the movie/book section and I'm standing with Meganne and Andrew while they are looking at books and my mom is going through the movies that Alexander might want. So, glance down at Meganne just in time to see her squatting on the floor blowing a kiss with a flirty look on her face to a book on the bottom shelf. My eyes wander to the book she's "kissing" and it's a Justin Bieber book! LMAO! I couldn't stop laughing, which was partly a mistake because she turned red and got embarrassed. But it was so freaking cute! Good Gracious! My 5 year old is interested in boys. YIKES! I can only imagine what her teen years will be like. Stephen's going to have to buy a shotgun I think. Anyway, I couldn't help but share. My kids rock and I love them.
I'd write something funny about Zander, but I already attributed an entire blog about his birthday, so it was the other 2's day today.

Mothers
I received this from a good friend in my email. It was truly touching. I couldn't resist sharing with everyone...
Mothers The officer at the Driving License counter asked the lady "What is your occupation?" The woman seeking renewal of her license seemed to be puzzled. So the officer said "Ma'am, are you employed, have your own business or........ The woman replied "Oh, yes!! I have a full time occupation. I am a mother" Officer: "We don't have 'mother' as an option for occupation. I will write it down as 'Housewife'. That takes care of all questions." This had happened long ago, and was forgotten. Years later when I went to get my license, the Public Relations Officer was a somewhat pompous woman. "Your occupation?" she asked in a rather authoritative tone. I just had an inspiration and replied "I am a researcher in the field of Child Development, Nutrition and Inter-personal Relationships" The lady officer stared at me in amazement. I calmly repeated my statement and she wrote it down verbatim. Then, unable to conceal her curiosity, she politely asked "What exactly do you do in your profession, Ma'am?" I was feeling good about having described my occupation so calmly and confidently. So I replied "My research projects have been going on for a number of years (Mothers never retire!!). My research is conducted in the laboratory as well as in the field. I have two bosses. (One is God and the other is my entire family). I have received two honours in this field. (A son and a daughter) My topic is considered to be the most difficult part of sociology. (All moms will agree!!). I have to work more than 14 hours every day. Sometimes even 24 hours are not enough and the challenges are tougher than many other professions. My compensation is in terms of mental satisfaction rather than money" I could see that the officer was thoroughly impressed. After completing the licensing formalities, she came to the door to see me off. This new viewpoint about my occupation made me feel much better on my way back home. I was welcomed by my 5 year old research assistant at the door. My new project (my 6 month old baby) was energetically practicing her 'music'. I had earned a small victory over the Governmental red tape today. I was no longer 'merely a mother', instead I was now a highly placed functionary in a service vital for mankind - Motherhood!! 'Mother' - Isn't it a great title. Fit to be added to the nameplate on the door!! By this standard, grandmothers deserve to be called Senior Research Officers, and Great Grandmothers qualify as 'Research Directors'. Aunts and other ladies of that age group can be called 'Research Facilitators' Please share this with all mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, aunts...... They will all shower you with blessings and life will be happier.

Then, unable to conceal her curiosity, she politely asked "What exactly do you do in your profession, Ma'am?" My Baby Is Growing!
I may not be able to post this tomorrow, so I will post my tribute to my wonderful Oldest Son today. I have a little boy who is no longer a little boy. He is officially entering TEEN YEARS! Tomorrow my oldest son Alexander is turning 13 years old. As I sit here and think about the last 13 years, I can't believe how fast the time has flown. On April 10th 1998, I gave birth to my very first baby. I had no idea what to expect during my entire pregnancy. I had no idea what labor was like and I had even less idea what it would be like to give birth. But the most unexpected thing was how much I would love that thing that grew inside me for 9 months and hurt like hell coming out!! He came into this world doing his own thing. He came out facing the ceiling instead of the floor which put me through recuperating hell. During his first week of life I remember a conversation I had with my mom about the day he would turn 13 and how far away it seemed that day. And now look...it's TOMORROW!
I have to say that raising Alexander hasn't been very easy. He's challenged me, he's irritated me, and his ADHD has taught me and Stephen a lesson or two about how to raise a child that has a learning disability. He is a daily learning challenge for us. This, by no means, diminishes our love for him. As a matter of fact, our love for him has been part of our friction. We love him so much that it makes it difficult for us to be understanding when we need to be and strict when we need to be. But, by no means do we love him or will we love him any less. He has been a blessing to us and we are so happy that the Lord gave him to us 13 years ago. So although we are frightened to enter the teen years with him, we are so excited that he is turning 13 tomorrow.
He actually even surprised us this year. We, unfortunately, had to explain to him that his birthday would be rather small this year. He took it like a man and was ok with it. When we asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday (like a party, invite friends over to play, go somewhere special...) his answer to us was that he wanted to stay home and spend time with us. He wanted to open his presents and play with them and stay home. What a big boy he's becoming. I actually had to tell him it was OK if he wanted to have some friends over. So, finally he agreed to have 2 friends over on Monday (since he never has school on Mondays.) We are going to go get a pizza at Chuck E cheese and let them play games and win tickets. Then we are coming home to play the WII and the Playstation. And that's it. Simple, not too expensive, and easy! I was so proud of him for just wanting a quiet birthday and not a huge spectacle.
Anyway, Tomorrow will be a blessing. Even though I feel OLD because I will now have a 13 year old SON, I am so happy that I get to celebrate with my favorite 13 year old and have a quiet day at home with him. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY! I hope your 13th birthday is better than last year!!! I love you!!!

Life's Lesson
So, with the economy the way it is now, all the current natural disasters and our current jobless situation, all this got me thinking about and chatting with some friends about what we are supposed to learn from all of this. I really think the Lord is trying to teach us a lesson. This was further pounded into my head today when I went to mass (as encouraged by a coworker in the church office, even though I'd missed the readings.) I made just in time to hear Father's homily. His message was to put God first and stop worrying about your material possessions. God should always come first in your life, no matter what. So, maybe what God is saying to us these days is simply that. Stop worshiping money, electronics, houses, cars, etc...and start thinking about what really matters in your life. Start thinking about your salvation and what you are going to do with your life to walk the path of the Lord. My friends agree.
When you look at the disaster of this economy, what is it that it's forcing people to do with their lives when they lose their homes or their possessions? Maybe they are turning to God with prayer for help. Maybe they are turning to their families for roofs over their heads. Maybe they are selling their worldly goods so they can afford the simple things in life. Maybe they are able to keep their homes, but want a vacation, so instead of spending money on a luxurious hotel, maybe they are camping in Nature with their kids and families and enjoying the world that God made for us. After all, Love of God, family, and friends should come first.
When you look at the disaster of the Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan, what is happening with the people in the world when they watch the videos or the news about the clean up and disaster of the Nuclear plant? People world wide are donating the money they have to pay for supplies for the victims. People are finding ways to travel to Japan to help with the clean up. The survivors are helping one another to find missing family members. The hospital workers are working over time to help the sick victims and the dying. Again, they are putting compassion and love above all else to help in this horrible situation.
It's sad that it takes Catastrophes for people to realize that we need to have compassion and empathy for one another. But maybe a wake up call is all we need, now and then, to be reminded of what's important in life. I hope today's blog gives you something to think about as you go through your everyday life. God bless each and every one of you!

Appeal
So, the only thing going through our heads right now is Stephen's appeal. We are hoping and praying that he wins it and is re-instated next week. I really think he has a good case and I think he can win if the appeals board isn't stupid. Something tells me they're stupid though. But, if that's the case, we DEFINITELY have a good shot at suing them! Meanwhile, win or lose, Stephen is still looking for jobs elsewhere. I really think that if he's re-instated, there will be layoffs again and he will be affected which puts us right back in this situation again. In my heart of hearts I feel as if there is a move in our near future. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that if we move, it'll be somewhere close to here so we can visit and preferably close to his family so that we have relatives close by. We'll see. That being the case, I ask that you continue to pray for us that the Lord has chosen the path that will be the best, the safest, and make us the most happy with our decision as it is all in his hands now.

Lent and my traditions
Ok, so this may sound hokey, but during Lent I like to watch and listen to Jesus Christ Superstar. The 1970's version of the passion of Christ really is fun to watch, listen to, but yet, it helps me to contemplate the passion Jesus went through so we can be forgiven for our sins. Today I was able to share this experience with 2 of my closest friends. (while I was pampered and getting my toes done. ;) ) This movie was truly an amazing movie and it's one of my all time favorites. Although I loved Mel Gibson's version of the Passion of Christ I can't bring myself to watch it again. Mostly because I cry through the entire movie. I connect with Mary and watching her son go through the brutality that Jesus did and, being a mother and putting myself in her position, it is too hard for me to picture watching either one of my sons going through that. I appreciate more than words can ever express what Jesus did for us and our Salvation, but it's too hard to watch that one. So, I opt for the more upbeat G rated version of the 1970s. Plus, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice did an amazing job writing the music and Lyrics. Anyway, here's the opening song, sung by Carl Anderson, plus one of my favorite songs sung by Ted Neely:

What it takes to be a Saint
Today's blog is in honor of Sunday the Sabbath and a little lesson on what it takes to become a Saint. Since Yesterday was the 6th anniversary of Pope John Paul the II's death I thought it would be fitting to talk about what the process is for him to become a Saint and to honor him in my blog. Honor is due to this great man as he was not only famous to us who are Catholic, but also to those who are not! So, from the catholic.org site I copied and pasted this information. It's rather interesting and something to learn for those of you who are not Catholic and have never heard of this process...
Canonization, the process the Church uses to name a saint, has only been used since the tenth century. For hundreds of years, starting with the first martyrs of the early Church, saints were chosen by public acclaim. Though this was a more democratic way to recognize saints, some saints' stories were distorted by legend and some never existed. Gradually, the bishops and finally the Vatican took over authority for approving saints.
In 1983, Pope John Paul II made sweeping changes in the canonization procedure. The process begins after the death of a Catholic whom people regard as holy. Often, the process starts many years after death in order give perspective on the candidate. The local bishop investigates the candidate's life and writings for heroic virtue (or martyrdom) and orthodoxy of doctrine. Then a panel of theologians at the Vatican evaluates the candidate. After approval by the panel and cardinals of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the pope proclaims the candidate "venerable."
The next step, beatification, requires evidence of one miracle (except in the case of martyrs). Since miracles are considered proof that the person is in heaven and can intercede for us, the miracle must take place after the candidate's death and as a result of a specific petition to the candidate. When the pope proclaims the candidate beatified or "blessed," the person can be venerated by a particular region or group of people with whom the person holds special importance.
Only after one more miracle will the pope canonize the saint (this includes martyrs as well). The title of saint tells us that the person lived a holy life, is in heaven, and is to be honored by the universal Church. Canonization does not "make" a person a saint; it recognizes what God has already done.
Though canonization is infallible and irrevocable, it takes a long time and a lot of effort. So while every person who is canonized is a saint, not every holy person has been canonized. You have probably known many "saints" in your life, and you are called by God to be one yourself.
As for the former Pope? He will be beatified on May 1st this year. A special beatification mass will be said by Pope Benedict the XVI for him and the process of canonization will begin. God Bless Pope John Paul the II. Please intercede for us and help us to weather the storms arising in the world today. AMEN!

Times of Change
Today was my annual RCIA retreat. As I sat there listening to Fr. Gerry, Ed and Geno teach their topics to my Elect I came to the realization that times are changing. Some things seem to be changing for the good and some, well, I don't know if it's good or bad. The first change coming, is this year's class. They have only a couple of short weeks until the Easter Vigil. They will be baptized, receive their First Holy Communion, and their Confirmation. This change is good. This is what they have been working towards all year long and they deserve the fruits of their efforts. I look forward to the Vigil and seeing their faces as the Holy Spirit descends upon them and gives them the gifts they are intended. That, to me, is the fruit of MY effort. I anticipate their happiness in the night of the Vigil. Again, this change is good.
But as I sat there and listened to these speakers, I couldn't help but think of the changes going on in my life. I love coordinating the RCIA. It is a wonderful job to have. But, what will next year bring? Will I still be in Vegas? Will I still be able to run the program that I love so dearly? Only time will tell. This change is undecided...good or bad? I also thought about my dear friend Geno, as he taught his topic today. He will be moving to Hawaii in a month or so. This change is bad. Well, only bad for me. I will lose my right hand man in RCIA. I will miss my friends, him and his wife. But this change is good for both of them! They will be living in paradise and in a place they truly love. For that I am happy. I always want the people I care deeply about to be happy even if it means a loss in some way for myself.
In these changes, what have I learned? I've learned that change is good, change is iffy and change can be an adventure. I've learned that sometimes change is needed in order to move forward. I've also learned to accept change because change helps you grow. I have left my life in the hands of the Lord and I know he will lead us to where we are most needed, weather that be here in Vegas or somewhere else. I'm ready and willing and I'm listening to God to guide me to what is best. I look forward to change and I'm happy for the change happening to my Elect as they finish their journey with me in the RCIA.
God Bless!

Why do they wear that?
So, the other day I was at a store and saw this lady. I sneaked a picture of her because I couldn't believe what she was wearing. I mean, really, do people check their mirrors before they leave their houses? And those emails that go around with pictures of people at Walmart...Anyway, it just amazes me. So, here's what she looks like. I have to say, pay attention to the capri's with the socks and sandals...WTH?

Baby Talk
Ok, so you all get 2 from me today. I couldn't resist. Thanks to a FB friend I got this link to a You Tube video of twin boys talking to each other. Amazing how they really do have their own language. They even have the inflection of "Question-Answer" format. One asks a question and the other answers. It's amazing. I giggled the whole way through it and to tell you the truth, to quote my FB friend, they both have some compelling arguments.
Toys these days
Ok, so this just boggles my mind. Today I turned on the radio to the middle of a conversation about toys and what they do. Then shortly after, my manicurist told me this story hit the news. They have made a doll that teaches little girls how to Breast Feed! Seriously? Are we really pushing motherhood on 4 and 5 year olds now? And so graphically that they now have to learn to breastfeed at an early age? I really don't get it. Here's a link from Yahoo...http://theoaklandpress.com/articles/2011/03/30/news/doc4d929cc14e448398001208.txt
Anyway, I believe in breastfeeding. I breastfed all of my children. However, I don't think it's appropriate for children 4+ to be imitating breastfeeding. The question that runs through my mind as I think of this doll, is "How many more teenage pregnancies will happen in the future because this doll encourages children to be young mothers?" Now, the toy company may have had other ideas in mind when they created this toy, like maybe promoting breast over bottle, but does it really have to be introduced to kids at such a young age? I mean, they don't even know about sex at that age, let alone the reason for breastfeeding. Now, I can see if they have baby siblings and the mother talks to them about breastfeeding and why it's done, but, face it, now a days parents just don't do that. They don't talk to their kids about topics such as these. So, can someone explain to me the reason the inventor of this particular doll thought this was a good idea? I would NEVER buy my daughter a doll that did that. I never even bought her a doll that "peed" in the potty when I was potty training her. What is this world coming to?

To Recess or not to recess, that is the question...
Today I thought I'd catch up on my spiritual Three Minutes a Day reading. Sometimes I don't have time to read it or I forget, so I fall a few days behind. Well, the one I was supposed to read on March 26th discussed the importance of Children spending time outdoors. It addresses the fact that when Children play outside it helps develop their large motor skills, their social skills and improves their imagination. I completely agree! Although my children dearly love video games, I try to make sure they play outside as well. For those of you who know me and my children, I have 2 very active kids (well, all my kids are active, but 2 are particularly very "busy") One is an ADHD child and the other is just very hyper and she always has to be moving. It's amazing she lays still long enough to sleep! Anyway, in reading this particular passage it got me thinking about the early days in school of my Eldest child. We, of course, enrolled him in the public school we were zoned for when he was of Kindergarten age. By the time he got to 1st grade we found out that the school only had ONE fifteen minute break outside for recess and this was right after the kids ate lunch. That was it! ONE! I was horror stricken! They of course tried to appease me by saying they took potty breaks 2 other times during the day, but seriously! That's not running playing and screaming time! Get Real! During this time, since he was our first child and this was our first time dealing with the public school system, we were also trying to diagnose him as ADHD. We had a lot to learn. By Second grade we sat down with the teacher and told her that she'd better give him some breaks or she'd be pretty miserable! So, it took US to suggest that during the potty breaks, instead of taking them to the bathroom INDOORS, take them to the OUTDOOR potty and if they didn't want to go potty, let them run around on the playground for 10 minutes. Can you believe she was actually SURPRISED at how much better her class behaved when she did this twice a day? Go figure!!! Well, after further research, we come to find out that most of the schools in the Clark County School district DONT let the children have any other recesses during the day; just the one at lunch time! I was appalled! I grew up in this school district and always had a 10 minute morning recess, a half hour lunch break and a 10 minute afternoon recess. This was in Boulder City though. (the other issue with this school was that they acted like they didn't know what an IEP or a 504 plan for special ed children were. That's another topic though.) So, needless to say, we yanked him out of that school and tried parochial school because we knew they had recess time.
So, what's my point to all of this? Well, I'd like to know why schools think it's ok to work the children all day with only one lunch break and enough time to pee and get back to class for the rest of the day, when even the Work Force says you, as an adult, have to take TWO 10-15 minute breaks and at least a half hour of lunch when you work an 8 hour day. Why do the Adults get recess and the kids don't? Wanna know one of the reasons I was given? Because we are trying to keep up with the education of Japan and the Japanese kids don't get breaks so neither do we! Yeah, except Clark County is voted one of the 10 worst School Districts in the country! And they think not giving the kids recess is going to help that? How about paying teachers more money and reducing classroom sizes?! According to this website Nevada is #2 for the worst school district in America!
http://www.walletpop.com/photos/best-and-worst-public-school-systems-in-us/ and here's what it says:
Overall State Grade: D+
Chance of Student Success: D+
School Finance: D
K-12 Achievement: D-
I also have this comment: If everyone wants their children to be successful adults, I agree that education is important, but so is being a kid when you ARE a kid! After all they are only a kid one time in their lives, so I think they should enjoy it and play and take breaks from their school work, don't you? I mean, really, if you didn't get any breaks in your 9 to 5 job would you be performing at your peak everyday? Or would you go mad because you couldn't get up and stretch your legs, relax your brain, and have a bite to eat or a drink of water? I plead my case!!!
2nd Worst: Nevada
Total Score: 68.8 (out of 100)Overall State Grade: D+

If Only...
So, I have to change the "feeling" of my blog and move away from the events of the week. Yesterday Stephen showed me a video of a woman who is 119 years old. I'm amazed! This means she was born in 1892! In the video the news caster says she has no ailments, she walks on her own (with only the aid of a walker,) She has outlived her children and lives with her 61 year old Grandson. Can you imagine? Think of all the changes she's seen in her lifetime! She was alive for Titanic's sinking, WWII, Vietnam, Kennedy's assasination, the drug riddled 60s and 70s, The punk 80's and has lived to see not one, but 2 new centuries. Now, I don't know about you, but what would you do with yourselves if you lived to be 119 years old? Would you even want to? I think the latter question opens a new can of worms, so I'd better not go there. Anyway, here's the link, watch and enjoy!

My thoughts about the future
Ok, so now that we have to move on with our lives and take an active role in determining our future, I've begun to think out a few scenarios. My number one choice is to stay in Vegas. Stephen has begun to iron out all the details of his appeal with his co-workers and it sounds like he has a good case. So, this being the best, he wins the appeal, he's re-hired with the county and nothing changes. We have our benefits and the life we've known for the last 15 years. After all, who can't take comfort in what's easy...we wouldn't have to uproot the kids from their schools and friends, we have the medical benefits we're used to and can stick with the same Dr.'s we have the house we've lived in for 15 years, and I get to stay near my family.
However, moving on now to scenario number 2. Stephen gets a job with another Engineering firm and takes an immediate position in San Diego, or Augusta Georgia. San Diego would be the preferred option here. Now, there are pros and cons to this decision. Some Pros...Stephen hates Vegas and has been wanting to move back to CA for a LOOOOOOONG time now. San Diego is very pretty! There are better schools in CA than in Las Vegas. We will be 2 hours away from HIS family and only 5 away from mine, which is much much closer than Augusta Georgia would be. And I have to say, I wouldn't mind living near a beach ;) (I've always wanted to and want to retire in a beach house anyway ;) ) Cons? Um...no seriously, there are some. One would be uprooting the kids. Another, I've never lived anywhere except the Vegas Valley (although this could be an adventure) Having to start all over in finding schools, churches, friends, Dr's etc...Not exactly fun, but part of the necessary process. Money is also an issue: Salary, Benefits, CA has state taxes which suck, how much house we could get there, etc...As for Augusta? Hmmmm, it's definitely new, that's for sure! It looks pretty online? I love the houses and the land that goes with them (from what I've seen on the net) and again, an adventure it would be. I'm sure there are other companies that Stephen could work for and some may even still be in Vegas, so that's also not in the realm of possibilities either.
So, what to do now? Only God knows. It's really tough to not be able to predict the future. Where's my Crystal ball or magic mirror on the wall when I need it? My best advice to Stephen is this. File his appeal, win it, take his job back and if something better ever comes along, take it and resign from the County.

The loss, the birthday and the future
As I sit here looking at my blank page, I wonder where to even begin. I guess the beginning will be sufficient. About a month ago the County laid off close to 60 employees and a chunk of them were in Stephen's division. Well, 3 of those employees took their case to the appeals board and won. So, this meant Stephen was next to go. Sure enough, at 7:30 this morning he met with his boss and he's officially been laid off from the county. He's been with the County for 15 years. This of course doesn't matter one bit as he's only been a Senior Engineer for 2. The 3 people that won their appeals have been Senior Engineers for 2 1/2 years, so they beat him by about 6 months in the Seniority chain, even though Stephen was hired with the Building Department 3 years before they were and, like I said, the County for 15 years.
We are unsure about our future. He has contacts with professional Engineering firms here in Vegas. One company is located here, in San Diego, and in Augusta Georgia. The part that scares me the most about this is our Medical Benifits. They run out at the end of the month. Our eldest is on meds for his ADHD and they aren't cheap WITH insurance. I can only imagine what they'll be without. Part of me feels like maybe this is trying to tell us something. Stephen has always wanted to move back to California. If there are positions in San Diego, I can picture myself living there. I guess I feel like Vegas is slowly dying, since we are the worst city in the nation as far as digging ourselves out of this recession. So, maybe God is trying to tell us to bail now! Who knows. All I know is that I love Stephen with all my heart and I know this is very difficult on him. He has a lot on his shoulders in trying to stay strong for me and his kids. He wants to be the "man" and support us in all of this and deep down I know he feels like a failure. WHICH he is NOT! He knows as well as I do that we had no control over this matter.
To top the day off today is his 40th birthday. What a way to spend it huh? I don't know what to do for him to make it special, but I'm certainly going to try my best. I know this will go down in the history books as the WORST birthday EVER!

My Baby Andrew
Well, I'm blogging about this today because I don't know if I'll have time to do it tomorrow. This is all about my Middle Child, my beloved Andrew. Eight years ago on March 18 2003, I gave birth to my second child Andrew Stephen Toms. This was a very special day for obvious reasons. I was induced at Mountain View Hospital here in Vegas. The atmosphere was very calm, but full of excitement as Stephen and I awaited the birth of our beautiful baby boy. After 9 hours of labor, and, yes I opted for the WONDERFUL epidural. (I'm a wimp with intense pain) In comparison to the birth of my first child, Alexander, Andrew was CAKE! In the labor and delivery room with me was my Dr., a nurse, Stephen and myself. I was really expecting Chaos because that's all I knew, but when it came time to push, it was very relaxed. We were actually shooting the breeze about the news stories we were watching on TV between Contractions. It was surreal! After 4 short pushes my baby Andrew was born. What's the reason for mentioning all this? Well, his personality mimicks his birth. As does Alexander's and Megannes. Anyway, ever since that day, my Andrew has been a blessing to my life and I'm sure to Stephen's. He has shown me that I CAN be patient with my kids, because he is a very calm child. He has brought so much into my life. He is strong, extraordinarily smart, loving, and funny. He loves sports, cake decorating, playing with Legos, video games as well as board games. He is even in the Chess club at school. He loves my music, he's pretty easy to please and he doesn't ever ask for very much except for snuggle time every now and then, food and a place to lay his head at night. He has grown up so very fast and I just can't believe he will be 8 tomorrow. He is one of the joys of my life and I love him so very much. So, I have to say, HAPPY, HAPPY 8TH BIRTHDAY ANDREW STEPHEN! Mommy and daddy love you very much.

RCIA day
So today was one of my busiest days with my RCIA program. Today my Catachumen attended the rite of sending and rite of election. You might ask, what are Catachumen? They are people who have never been baptized or were not baptized in a faith the Catholic Church recognizes. Today they signed their names in the book of life and were sent to the Bishop to become the Elect. Elect meaning they have been elected to finish their Catholic Formation and receive their sacraments. In just 6 short weeks they will be "full blown" Catholics. They will be baptized, receive Confirmation and receive Holy Communion. They along with our Converts and Catholics who need to receive Confirmation will be taking part in the biggest nights of their lives. I am so happy to be a part of their spiritual development. I meet so many wonderful people filled with the light of Christ every year. It's amazing to watch the transformation. I am so proud of everyone today and I'm thrilled they they will accomplish their goals of becoming Catholic at Easter. Congrats to everyone. God Bless.

Andrew and Metallica
For those of you who know me you know one of my favorite bands is Metallica. I've loved them since High School. Therefore I play it often in my car and both of my boys have Metallica songs, of their own choice, on their Ipods. Suffice it to say my love for Metallica is definitely rubbing off on them. Andrew looks forward to his drive to school every morning because KOMP plays morning Metallica at 7am. So this starts his day off on the right foot every day.
Andrew is taking Drum lessons, and yes this has to do with Metallica. Well, one of his drumming inspirations is Lars Ulrich from Metallica. So, tonight I took him to his lesson. When it was over I was talking to his instructor about his progress. He told me he could tell Andrew had been practicing. I said, yes, and he's quite enjoying drumming along with his I pod. So, Andrew piped up with , "Yeah, I want to go turn on the next Metallica song on my Ipod and practice on the way home." His instructor told him that it was a good group to practice with. Here's the rest of the conversation between Andrew and me...
Andrew "Yeah, the best drummer ever comes from Metallica."
Me, "Really?"
Andrew "Yeah, the best adult drummer anyway. I'M the best KID drummer."
LOL, I couldn't believe it. But then again I can. This is the kid who told me he was the best on the team in baseball when he was 4. He's also been known to tell me he's the best 7 year old bowler. So, it shouldn't be a surprise to me that he thinks he's the best kid drummer. Keep in mind he does have talent, but he's only been taking lessons for a couple months now. It just made me laugh. I'm happy I've been able to instill in my kids some self esteem, since that's been a huge struggle for myself. I'm also happy that I can find joy and laughter when my kids say something cute like that. And lastly, I'm happy that my kids like my music!

FAT TUESDAY
Those of you who are not Catholic might ask what is Fat Tuesday exactly. This is a summary in a very small nutshell.
Fat Tuesday is an unofficial celebration that is generally recognized by those of the Catholic denomination of Christianity, or by any other group that fasts for Lent during that same time (this would exclude the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox denominations, for example, who do not generally celebrate Lent at the same time).
It is celebrated on the day before Lent , the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is a day where people eat gluttonous amounts of rich fatty food, drink ... Hence the name "Fat Tuesday." it is a time to fast/give up your desires and recognize the Feast of Resurrection.
The Feast of Resurrection, commonly known as Easter, is on a Sunday each year, and the fast of Lent lasts 40 days. Therefore, Lent always begins on a Wednesday followed by Fat Tuesday as an annual celebration .
Thus, today we celebrate by eating to our hearts Content. Ash Wednesday is a fasting day and an abstinence day (where we don't eat meat.) Way back when fasting meant exactly that...no eating or drinking for the entire day. Today we have adapted it to mean one regular sized meal and 2 smaller meals that don't equal that regular sized one. Senior Citizens are Exempt as are Children under 12 and anyone with a medical condition that would endanger their lives if they don't eat regularly (like my daughter who is hypoglycemic.)

So, today, since I've decided to give up sweets for Lent, (as well as yelling at my children and maybe committing to P90X for my health and well being) I eat tons of meat and sweets! Yum! It is truly a sacrifice for me to give up the sweets. I love them. I can't not have them, so it will be difficult for me this year. Yelling at my kids is something I do way too often, so finding a better way to communicate, especially when we are pressed for time in the morning before school, will be challenging but we will all be better off in the long run. As for the P90X...exercising is better for my health then sitting around being lazy. It will not only help me to lose the weight I've been trying to lose for 5 years, but it will keep my body healthy and help me live up to the example of my 83 year old grandmother who to this day dances 3 times a week, still drives, still breaths on her own without oxygen, and has never used a walker or cane. If I can be as active as she is when I'm 83 I will be very happy with myself.
So, to those who celebrate Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Lent and Easter...Happy Fat Tuesday everyone. To those that don't...God bless you all.

Motivation
Motivation means, according to Mirriam Webster,
Why is motivation my topic for the day? Well, because I still struggle to lose 25lbs. I have some motivating things going on in my life that I'd like to look good for, like my 20 year high school reunion and this summer I'd like to wear a bikini again, but somehow that doesn't seem to be enough. Every day is a struggle. Like today for instance, I decided it would be a good idea to eat a candy bar with peanut butter for desert from lunch because I was craving chocolate. My excuse was, tomorrow is fat Tuesday and I'm giving up sweets for lent with the only exception being Andrew's birthday because I ordered him cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes (the source of the TLC show DC Cupcakes) and I really want to try one. So, I gave myself the go ahead to eat something I didn't need today because I knew I wasn't going to get sweets again till Easter. This happens to me daily, and then I wonder why I'm still hanging on to the 25lbs. I really need to break out my Weight Watchers Cookbooks and make some Weight Watcher's friendly deserts, after Lent of course. I also want to start P90X. I had every excuse in the book not to work out today. So, people, some words of wisdom and some motivation would be helpful! I know I can do it, I just need to find the way and the will.

Happiness
Happiness. What is Happiness? Websters defines it as-good fortune : prosperity
2a : a state of well-being and contentment : joy b : a pleasurable or satisfying experience
How do I describe, see and feel happiness? Well in many ways actually. Happiness to me is listening to my children play outside and get along. It's listening to them laugh and giggle. It's watching my Oldest tickle my youngest in order to get here to stop playing the piano because he wants to watch his recorded TV show because everyone knows its better to do that then to scream at her or, God forbid, hit her or something. Happiness is getting to sleep in today and having my wonderful husband kiss me goodbye and call me angel before he leaves for work. (Yes, I hear it every time) Happiness is going right back to sleep after that because I know he is going to work to give us a roof over our heads and to make sure my kids go to a good private school and because he makes me feel loved and safe. Happiness is getting to enjoy a cup of Decaf coffee in the morning (can't do the leaded brand because it makes me have heart palpatations) because we have running water and the means to make it for my enjoyment. Happiness is watching a movie with my family on the couch all snuggled up together and eating popcorn. Happiness is running my RCIA program because I know it keeps me close to God and it's satisfying to see everyone grow in their faith and love of the Lord. Happiness is petting and loving our pets because they bring peace to me and my children as well as responsibility and all they ask for is a little love, food and water.
As I write this I realize I have a lot to be thankful for. What I mentioned is just the tip of the iceburg. I hope everyone reading this can come up with their own types of happiness. I also hope I've inspired someone to look for the happy in their lives and to dwell on that instead of the things that might bring them down. God Bless!

Expensive free kitty
So, a year ago today our cat Frodo was born. We got him from a friend from church and he was born to a Ferrel cat. We got him for Alexander who really wanted to have a cat for his birthday, one he could take care of, one that would be his very own. He grew up with my cats Aerial and Sebastian, and never connected with them because they weren't HIS. So, at the end of April, as a birthday gift, though belated, we brought home "baby Frodo" as he calls him. Frodo was so tiny he could fit in the palm of our hands. And, best of all he was free!
Well, Yesterday, I had to take him to the Vet for what I thought was a urinary tract infection. HA! It was much, much worse than that, as is our luck. He had developed so many crystals and debris in his bladder that it was very, VERY stuck in his urethra. Plus his bladder was the size of a Softball which is rather huge for a small kitty of 11lbs and only a year old. The Vet couldn't unblock him so he was referred to an Emergency Veterinary clinic for emergency PU surgery. Sorry to the men out there, but I have to give a little detail. They basically castrate him and give him a bigger opening to pee out of. EEK! This by all means doesn't prevent crystals from forming, it just improves his chances of passing the crystals, stones, debris that may form in the future. Plus we will have to have him on a strict diet and he'll have to wear a cone on his head for a couple of weeks. So, now the part that gave Stephen a Coronary...the bill. Yes, this free cat is now costing us $3000 for this surgery. Who says that Vets can charge as much as Dr.'s? Luckily they have a payment plan, but geez, really? That much for a cat? I love animals and will do anything for them to keep them safe and healthy, but, do the Vets really have to charge that much?
Anyway, Alexander and I visited him in the hospital today. Poor thing is shaved and has his entire right front leg bandaged because he has an IV in it. He didn't want to be held and kept trying to shake off the bandage and get the cone off. But otherwise he's back to his normal self, well, as normal as can be given the contraptions, and Alexander just wanted to bring him back home. Knock on wood, I can only hope our other animals don't go through extensive procedures like that that will cost us another $3000!
