So, with the economy the way it is now, all the current natural disasters and our current jobless situation, all this got me thinking about and chatting with some friends about what we are supposed to learn from all of this. I really think the Lord is trying to teach us a lesson. This was further pounded into my head today when I went to mass (as encouraged by a coworker in the church office, even though I'd missed the readings.) I made just in time to hear Father's homily. His message was to put God first and stop worrying about your material possessions. God should always come first in your life, no matter what. So, maybe what God is saying to us these days is simply that. Stop worshiping money, electronics, houses, cars, etc...and start thinking about what really matters in your life. Start thinking about your salvation and what you are going to do with your life to walk the path of the Lord. My friends agree.
When you look at the disaster of this economy, what is it that it's forcing people to do with their lives when they lose their homes or their possessions? Maybe they are turning to God with prayer for help. Maybe they are turning to their families for roofs over their heads. Maybe they are selling their worldly goods so they can afford the simple things in life. Maybe they are able to keep their homes, but want a vacation, so instead of spending money on a luxurious hotel, maybe they are camping in Nature with their kids and families and enjoying the world that God made for us. After all, Love of God, family, and friends should come first.
When you look at the disaster of the Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan, what is happening with the people in the world when they watch the videos or the news about the clean up and disaster of the Nuclear plant? People world wide are donating the money they have to pay for supplies for the victims. People are finding ways to travel to Japan to help with the clean up. The survivors are helping one another to find missing family members. The hospital workers are working over time to help the sick victims and the dying. Again, they are putting compassion and love above all else to help in this horrible situation.
It's sad that it takes Catastrophes for people to realize that we need to have compassion and empathy for one another. But maybe a wake up call is all we need, now and then, to be reminded of what's important in life. I hope today's blog gives you something to think about as you go through your everyday life.
